Baked ziti with classic tomato sauce

1 yellow onion, diced
2 small cloves garlic
8 ounces (half a box) ziti or other pasta
a small bunch of fresh basil
cup chopped pitted black olives
cup Parmesan cheese
cup part skim ricotta cheese
freshly ground black pepper, to taste
teaspoon salt for water
